Spain South ’25

We love Spain. We’ve been visiting Spain for years and we’re expanding that now with a more relaxed tour with shorter driving days. This is a new tour for 2025.

Whilst we had a great time with the first “Classics” tour last year, we noticed that everyone really enjoyed the slightly more relaxed pace and the shorter driving days.

So, if you’d like to bring your modern classic or actual classic that will be fine, but equally if you want to bring your shiny new car and you’re happy to have a more relaxing (but still brisk) drive through the stunning Spanish countryside, you can do that too.

Summary:
Monday – Make sure you’re at the Portsmouth ferry terminal by 20:00 this evening because the boat will leave at 21:30 and it won’t wait for you!

Tuesday – A gentle day relaxing on the ferry, perhaps with some whale watching thrown in? The Bay of Biscay can be absolutely beautiful.

Wednesday – When you arrive in Spain (at 08:00!) you’ll drive off the boat and straight into a gentle few hours of driving to get ourselves into the swing of Spanish roads and scenery. We’re straight into the Picos Europa mountains this afternoon on our way to the first night in Spain, near Oviedo.

Thursday – another easy day, this time going up and over “Dusty Mountain” on our way to the chocolate shop in Castrocontrigo, and then on to our Parador for the night near Valladolid.

Parador de Tordesillas | Paradores

Friday – A nice easy run south today, heading past Guadalupe and onto another lovely hotel for the night. Some fast but gentle cross country roads throughout the day, with a few technical twisties in between.

Hotel Cortijo Santa Cruz - Restaurante La Encomienda

Saturday – at long last we have reached our southernmost point of the tour, the magnificent town of Ronda. Ronda is a mountaintop city in Spain’s Malaga province that’s set dramatically above a deep gorge. This gorge (El Tajo) separates the city’s circa-15th-century new town from its old town, dating to Moorish rule. Puente Nuevo, a stone bridge spanning the gorge, has a lookout offering views. New town’s Plaza de Toros, a legendary 18th-century bullring, is one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks – just a couple of hundred metres from our hotel. We’re here for two nights too…

Sunday – an optional loop day. Do you fancy a walk around Ronda, a visit to the bullring, perhaps a drive to Marbella (Marbs!) or Malaga or even Gibraltar (the rock). You have choices, it’s your holiday, do what you want to do.

Monday – Time to start heading north again… so we’re heading for an old favourite, Trujillo. Plenty of fun to be had along the way, and we’ll end up right by the central square in Trujillo for a night of fun and frolics.

Tuesday – heading north again towards Valladolid and a hotel we’ve used before on private tours but not on a public tour… it’s a very special place with a magnificent building and an even more spectacular swimming pool and spa. Worth getting here long before dinner…

Thermal pool - Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena

Wednesday – Into the hills back towards the mountains of the Picos Europa.  The roads are largely deserted, the weather is consistently excellent, the roads are very well kept, and the scenery is almost as good as the driving. Onwards, to our spa hotel (fed by naturally warm spring waters!) – make sure you bring a swimsuit…. and if you’ve forgotten your swimming hat they’ll make you buy one!

Thursday – We have to be in Santander by lunchtime today… but first there’s some proper driving fun to be had. Are you coming?

Friday – Rest and relaxation aboard the ship home back to Plymouth (11:00 arrival). Plenty of time to discuss the week’s events with your fellow tourers and get over the hangover from last night’s party, before the drive home and a night in your own bed.
