Classics to Spain ’24

We love Spain. We’ve been visiting Spain for years and we’re expanding that now with a longer tour and shorter driving days. This is a new tour for 2024 and it’s primarily for “classics”.

The intention is to take cars which are at least 20 years old, and therefore we’re reducing the daily mileages compared to our normal Spanish tours to allow us to take a steadier pace and have a bit more downtime… which both the cars and the people will surely appreciate.

Summary:
Sunday – Make sure you’re at the Portsmouth ferry terminal by 20:00 this evening because the boat will leave at 21:45 and it won’t wait for you!

Monday – A gentle day relaxing on the ferry, perhaps with some whale watching thrown in? The Bay of Biscay can be absolutely beautiful.

Tuesday – When you arrive in Spain (at 08:00!) you’ll drive off the boat and straight into a gentle few hours of driving to get ourselves into the swing of Spanish roads and scenery. Not a long day, we’ve got plenty of time to explore these fabulous roads.

Wednesday – We’ve got a whole day of playing in the Picos Europa mountains today. Remember this is a lower paced and lower mileage tour, but we’re still all about the roads.

Thursday – another easy day, this time going up and over “Dusty Mountain” on our way to the chocolate shop in Castrocontrigo, and then on to our Parador for the night.

Friday – where are we going today? Well, we’ll head south and then cross the border into Portugal to another new hotel for us, this one has a thermal spa too so we can relax and unwind both tonight and tomorrow night.

Saturday – we’re off to the highest point in mainland Portugal, and returning back to the same hotel. We actually made our normal Spanish tour a day longer just so we could incorporate this mountain, it’s THAT good. Here’s a hint at what we’re doing:

Sunday – a little cross country run today, with a bit more mileage but huge straights and an easy way to cover the distances. Again, we’ll end up in a spectacular location, the town square in Lerma:

Monday – From Lerma we continue to head for the Pyrenees and one of our favourite hotels, the magical Alma in Pamplona, where we are staying for two nights.

Tuesday – an optional loop day, to explore the western Pyrenees. Definitely worth the day out if you’re up for it, but equally you can pop into Pamplona for the day if not. For those who are driving, we’ll be back in time to explore the city for dinner anyway…

Wednesday – Into the hills back towards the mountains of the Picos Europa.  The roads are largely deserted, the weather is consistently excellent, the roads are very well kept, and the scenery is almost as good as the driving. Onwards, to our spa hotel (fed by naturally warm spring waters!) – make sure you bring a swimsuit…. and if you’ve forgotten your swimming hat they’ll make you buy one!

Thursday – We have to be in Santander by lunchtime today… but first there’s some proper driving fun to be had. Are you coming?

Friday – Rest and relaxation aboard the ship home back to Plymouth (11:00 arrival). Plenty of time to discuss the week’s events with your fellow tourers and get over the hangover from last night’s party, before the drive home and a night in your own bed.
