Spain & Portugal ’24

Blessed with a superb climate and some interesting topography, Spain is certainly worthy of a visit. The food, the atmosphere, and the stunning natural lay of the land provide endless options for exploration.

Summary:
Sunday – Make sure you’re at the Portsmouth ferry terminal by 20:00 on this Sunday evening, as the boat leaves at 21:45 and it won’t wait for you!

Monday – Relax on board the ferry with your fellow tourers, maybe do a spot of whale watching…

Tuesday – When you arrive in Spain (at 08:00!) you’ll drive off the boat and straight into a gentle few hours of driving to get ourselves into the swing of Spanish roads and scenery. We’ve got a great day planned, taking us across the Picos Europa and into the first of our amazing hotels for this tour.

Wednesday – We leave our first hotel and head south into the hills and eventually down to our old favourite, “Dusty Mountain”. We’ll end up near the Portuguese border, just north of Bragança.

Thursday – normally at this point we’d be heading for our beloved fort just east of the Spanish border with Portugal, but sadly that’s in limbo at the moment… so we’ll head in the right direction to pass nearby and into Portugal in preparation for an EPIC day tomorrow.

Friday – You can leave your stuff at the hotel today as we’re staying in Portugal and then popping back to this amazing location. Want to know where we’re going? We’re going to the highest point in mainland Portugal, as per our friend Henry’s advice:

Saturday – We’ll head cross country this morning, bypassing Salamanca on the way to the lakes around Trujillo. Once again the roads are fast and flowing and the tarmac is deserted.

Sunday – We’ve got a long way to go today, to get us from one side of Spain to the other in the most painless way possible. We’ll have a couple of hours of fun this morning, then scoot past Madrid on the motorway, then have another couple of hours of fun roads on the way in to our hotel at Teruel.

Monday – A nice stretch through the hills above the coast today, heading towards Barcelona. Spain just keeps on giving. We end up at a hotel which is quite literally on the doorstep of the Pyrenees:

Tuesday – We’ve got a whole day of Pyrenees playground time today, heading west along the mountains and diving in and out when it suits us, all the way to Pamplona. One of the highlights of the morning is the Port de la Bonaigua, a favourite of Carfection’s Henry Catchpole;

Wednesday – an optional loop day today, which means you can go and play in the mountains with us, or go for a wander around Pamplona.

Thursday – We leave our last hotel (near Pamplona) to head for the boat at Santander – you can have a lie in and an easy motorway drive if you like, or you can savour the last day and some of the best roads in Spain to wring every last ounce of fun out of the trip. What a week!

Friday – arrive in Plymouth around 11:00 and then head for home and a nice, quiet weekend.
